What is CAT 6a ethernet cable ?

  • Cat7 (Category 7) and Cat7A (Category 7A) cables are high-performance Ethernet cables used in the cabling infrastructure of Gigabit Ethernet. They are specifically designed with stringent specifications for reducing crosstalk and Electromagnetic Interference (EMI).
  • CAT6A cable, named Category 6a cable, is used for Internet and Ethernet cabling infrastructure. Cat 6A performance is defined for frequencies up to 500 MHz—twice that of Cat 6.
  • Cat 6A also has an improved alien crosstalk specification compared to Cat 6, which picks up high levels of unfamiliar noise at high frequencies. For more about its key featuresand applications, please check our complete guide to Cat 6A cable.

What are CAT 6A used for?

Cat6A Ethernet cables, known for their advanced performance, are particularly suited for specific applications where their benefits justify the higher cost.
Here are some common use cases:
Data Centers:
Despite the challenge of Cat6A’s thicker design in cable-dense environments, it’s frequently used in data centers because of its excellent alien crosstalk mitigation, crucial in these settings.
Medium-Range Networks:
Cat6A is ideal for networks requiring 10 Gbps rates over medium distances, commonly found in healthcare and educational facilities. These environments have
high data usage but can often be serviced with 100- meter point-to-point cables. On larger campuses, Cat6A can complement fiber optic networks, offering cost savings in infrastructure.
Healthcare and Educational Facilities:
In healthcare offices and schools, where heavy data use is common, Cat6A provides the necessary speed and range without needing to switch to more expensive fiber optics.
Beyond Traditional Networking:
Cat6A is also beneficial for applications that go beyond typical voice and data transmission, such as CCTV, Power over Ethernet (PoE), and automation systems. Its
performance capabilities make it a suitable choice for these atypical, data-intensive functions.
Supplementing Fiber Networks:
In larger network infrastructures, Cat6A can serve as an efficient bridge or supplement to fiber optics, offering a balance between performance and cost.

CAT 6A Cable Speed, Construction, Standards, and Connectors

Here’s a breakdown of CAT 6A cable specifications:

Speed and Performance

CAT 6A (Category 6a) cable offers enhanced performance compared to CAT 6:1

  • Data Transfer Speed: Up to 10 Gbps.2
  • Frequency Bandwidth: Up to 500 MHz (double that of CAT 6).3 This higher bandwidth supports 10 Gbps speeds over longer distances.4
  • Maximum Cable Length: 100 meters (328 feet) for optimal performance.5

These specifications make CAT 6A ideal for demanding environments like:

  • Advanced home networks
  • Office networks
  • Data centers
  • Setups requiring high-definition video streaming, online gaming, and extensive data processing.6

Construction and Types

CAT 6A cable construction typically involves:

  • Conductor: 23 AWG solid copper.7

CAT 6A cables come in various shielding configurations:

  • U/UTP (Unshielded Twisted Pair): No shielding. Generally used in less interference-prone environments.
  • F/UTP (Foiled Unshielded Twisted Pair): Outer foil shield around the unshielded twisted pairs.8 Offers some EMI protection.
  • U/FTP (Unshielded/Foiled Twisted Pair): Each twisted pair is individually shielded with foil. Provides better EMI protection than F/UTP.
  • F/FTP (Foiled/Foiled Twisted Pair): Individually shielded pairs and an outer foil shield.9 Offers the best EMI protection.
  • Armored: Includes a corrugated steel tube for physical protection, often used in harsh environments.10

Packaging: Bulk cable is typically packaged in 100m, 300m, 305m, or 500m lengths on spools.

Jacket Options: Available jacket materials include PVC, PE, LSZH, CM, CMR, and CMP, each suited for different installation environments and fire safety requirements.

Standards and Certifications

CAT 6A cables comply with various standards and certifications, including:

  • Standards: ISO/IEC 11801-1 Ed.1.0, ANSI/TIA-568-C.2, ANSI/TIA-568.2-D, IEC60332-1, EN50399.
  • Certifications: UL, ETL, CPR, CE, DELTA, RoHS, REACH, ISO9001, ANATEL, SABS.

Connectors

  • RJ45: The standard connector for CAT 6A cable assemblies.11 It’s the most common connector used with network devices.
