CAT 6 Ethernet Cable: What It Is and What It's Used For

What is CAT 6 Cable?

CAT 6 (Category 6) cable is a standardized cable used for Ethernet and other networking applications.1 It’s designed to meet more rigorous specifications for crosstalk and system noise compared to CAT 5e. CAT 6 cables are rated for performance up to 250 MHz, significantly higher than the 100 MHz of CAT 5e. (For a more detailed explanation, see our complete guide to CAT 6 cable.)

What are CAT 6 Cables Used For?

CAT 6 cables are versatile and widely used in various networking scenarios:

  • Gigabit Ethernet Networks: CAT 6 is designed to support Gigabit Ethernet (1 Gbps) speeds, making it ideal for fast data transfer in homes and offices.

  • Office and Data Center Networking: Commonly used in businesses of all sizes to connect computers, servers, and network switches, ensuring reliable data transmission.2

  • Home Networking: A popular choice for home networks, supporting high-speed internet, HD video streaming, online gaming, and smart home device connectivity.3

  • Voice over IP (VoIP) and Video Conferencing: The increased bandwidth (250 MHz) makes CAT 6 suitable for VoIP and video conferencing, providing clear audio and video quality.

  • Power over Ethernet (PoE): CAT 6 cables can be used for PoE applications, powering devices like security cameras, VoIP phones, and wireless access points directly through the network cable.4

  • Multimedia Applications: The enhanced bandwidth of CAT 6 supports multimedia uses like video streaming, HD content transmission, and networked gaming, offering better speed and less interference.5

CAT6 cable Speed

Cat6 (Category 6) cables are designed to facilitate high-speed network connections with the following specifications:

Data Transfer Speed:

Cat6 cables are capable of supporting data transfer rates up to 1 Gigabit per second (Gbps) for lengths up to 100 meters. However, under certain conditions and over shorter distances (up to 55 meters), they can potentially support speeds up to 10 Gbps.

Frequency Bandwidth:

They offer a bandwidth of up to 250 MHz, which is double that of Cat5e cables (which have a bandwidth of 100 MHz). This increased bandwidth enables faster data
transmission over the network.

Specification/ Construction of CAT 6 cable

23 AWG Solid Copper
U/UTP:

the cable consists of 4 unshielded twisted pairs and no outer shielding.
F/UTP:

the cable consists of 4 unshielded twisted pairs, however, it contains an outer foil shield.
SF/UTP:

the cable consists of 4 unshielded twisted pairs, however, it contains an outer foil shield and braiding.
